Stand up for our nation’s history

 February 14th, 2025

There’s a disturbing movement from the Executive Office to erase transgender people from the history books, and the National Park Service’s website is showing compliance.

NPS’s page for the Stonewall National Monument has changed all references of LGBTQ+ to simply “LGB.” See screenshot below, and link https://www.nps.gov/ston/index.htm

At least as of the date of this post, the Library of Congress has not attempted to rewrite history, https://www.loc.gov/lgbt-pride-month/

Action Item

Submit a formal complaint to NPS about Stonewall National Monument’s erasure of transgender people here. Look for the sentence “Send complaints about the quality of disseminated information to the CCU via email” and click email.

The National Park Service is attacking the nation’s historic record and violating Director’s Order 11B with the erasure of transgender involvement in the Stonewall Inn raid and the history of the Stonewall National Monument (https://www.nps.gov/ston/index.htm). There are many sources to correct your removal of the word transgender and references to transgender people from this website: Stonewall: The Definitive Story of the LGBT Rights Uprising that Changed America” – by David Carter; Transgender History – by Susan Stryker; and even the Library of Congress (https://www.loc.gov/lgbt-pride-month/). Part of the role of the National Park Service is to tell the story of our people and reflect our accurate history. Removing reference to transgender people expresses a clear desire to marginalize and shame people who played an historical role in the advancement of civil rights in our nation. My child needs role models and you are removing them by systemically distorting our nation’s history for ideological reasons. I am so ashamed of the National Park Service staff. Specific corrective actions include undoing the actions that led to the removal of transgender people from this website and accurately describing the LGBTQ flag (it is not the LGB flag).

Dear [elected representative],

Please stand up for our nation’s historic record, and for your transgender constituents against yet another attack on their civil rights.

The National Park Service is violating Director’s Order 11B with the erasure of transgender involvement in the Stonewall Inn raid and the history of the Stonewall National Monument (https://www.nps.gov/ston/index.htm). There are many reputable sources that contradict this removal of the word transgender and references to transgender people from this website: Stonewall: The Definitive Story of the LGBT Rights Uprising that Changed America” – by David Carter; Transgender History – by Susan Stryker; and even the Library of Congress (https://www.loc.gov/lgbt-pride-month/).

Part of the role of the National Park Service is to tell the story of our people and reflect our accurate history. Removing reference to transgender people expresses a clear desire to marginalize and shame people who played an historical role in the advancement of civil rights in our nation. By removing reference to transgender people in this story, the U.S. government is systemically distorting our nation’s history for ideological reasons. I am so appalled by the National Park Service for participating willingly in this blatant distortion.

This is shameful and wrong. I strongly urge you to stand up for your constituents by ensuring that the NPS take immediate and specific corrective actions, including undoing the actions that led to the removal of transgender people from this website and accurately describing the LGBTQ flag (it is not the LGB flag).

Thank you for standing up for this vulnerable population in the face of repeated attacks on their civil rights, and on our nation’s historic record at large.

Sincerely,
